How do I submit my film to Milan Shorts?
Submissions are handled through FilmFreeway. Visit our Submit page and click the "Submit Your Film" button to access our FilmFreeway portal. You can choose between the Main Competition (for all filmmakers), the NextGen Section (for debut works and emerging talent), or CIP - Cinema Indie People (for low-budget films under €20,000). Make sure your film is completed after January 1, 2024, and has a maximum runtime of 30 minutes including credits.
What's the difference between the Main Competition and CIP?
The Main Competition features 12 highly selective films (8 in Main + 4 in NextGen) screened at Anteo Palazzo del Cinema, competing for six official awards. CIP (Cinema Indie People) is our parallel section specifically for low-budget films (under €20,000), offering three separate competitions: Best CIP Italian Short, Best CIP International Short, and Best CIP Debut Short. CIP winners are also screened at the festival and receive year-round promotion and support.
When are the submission deadlines?
Submission deadlines are announced each year on our FilmFreeway page and website. We typically have Early Bird, Regular, and Late deadlines. Follow us on Instagram (@milanshortsfilmfestival) or subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated on all deadline announcements.
Do I need to attend the festival if my film is selected?
While attendance is not mandatory, we strongly encourage filmmakers to join us in Milan! Selected filmmakers receive complimentary festival passes and are invited to participate in Q&A sessions, networking events, and industry panels. It's a great opportunity to connect with the community, meet fellow filmmakers, and experience Milan's vibrant cultural scene. CIP winners also receive free access to all festival activities.
How can I attend the festival as an audience member?
Festival passes and individual screening tickets are available for purchase on our website closer to the event dates (September 4-6, 2026). The festival takes place at Anteo Palazzo del Cinema and BAM – Biblioteca degli Alberi Milano. Follow our social media or subscribe to our newsletter for ticket release announcements. We offer both full festival passes and single-screening tickets to accommodate different schedules.
What is Fuoricinema and how does it relate to Milan Shorts?
Fuoricinema is a cultural marathon held annually in Milan, bringing together artists from film, music, and performing arts with the public through conversations, screenings, and live events. Milan Shorts collaborates with Fuoricinema to present a cohesive program throughout the festival days. Our morning and early afternoon screenings are integrated with Fuoricinema's evening programming, creating a full-day cultural experience. Past Fuoricinema guests have included Marco Bellocchio, Paola Cortellesi, Gabriele Salvatores, and many other celebrated Italian cinema figures.
